The following article, which appeared in the “Torch,” was sent to the Sentinel by one of its readers. He felt it would be nice to have it published in the Sentinel for the week of Mother’s Day. As stated in his note, “Truer words have never been spoken.” We hope you enjoy it and Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

Writing a tribute to our mothers is not so simple. The reason is, sadly there are many who did not really have a mother that was kind, compassionate, and loving.

Yet, in the whole, our mothers have often stood strong when facing great adversity.

Their tenacity in building this nation was incredible. We hear about how the west was won by the men who daringly blazed their way across the frontier. But it could be argued that the real winning of the west was when mothers brought their families and built schools, churches, and established the grace and charm of a cultured people.

It was these Christian mothers who gathered their children within their embracing arms and taught them the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer.

Our father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name…

They graced the family home. Prayed by the beside of their children and stood as the rock along side her husband as he struggled to build a nation, safe and secure.

The simplest farm woman with calloused hands is more worthy of praise and honor then any politician or preacher “dancing” across our TV screens.
