What Was Going On 14 Years Ago

Back by popular demand was the Stockton National Honor Society’s Newlywed or Maybe Not So Newlywed Game, slated for March 21, 2006. The ever-popular Ida Clare was to be the mistress of ceremonies.

The Rooks County His-torical Society was presenting a program on March 19, with a special program, “Buffalo Bob” presented by Robert Eickhoff, Natoma.

The Kenny Walker Medical Fund had been set up at the Stockton National Bank to help Kenny and his family defer their expenses for his cancer treatment.

Dr. Jennifer Brull spoke to Rooks County women at a free luncheon provided by the Rooks County Health Department for “Go Red For Womenf

The students of Stockton Grade School were treated to a presentation from the Bureau of Lectures & Concert Artists, Inc. on March 7. Sarai Paige, dressed in Egyptian garb, was the presenter, with the focus being on animals native to Egypt. Featured animals were a boa constrictor, a hedgehog, a serval cat, a scorpion, a fennec fox and an alligator. The event was sponsored by the Pat Berkley Taylor Fund.

A surprise going-away reception for Dick Jakoplic was held March 10 at the school cafeteria. Dick, who was moving to Hutchinson, had worked the previous nine years at Stockton High School as a volunteer in the Technology and Design classrooms.

At the MCEL Music Festival in Norton, held February 22nd, one soloist from Stockton received the highest rating possible. MaryLynn Griebel earned an AP (Advanced Performance) rating for her vocal solo, Shenandoah.

Stockton Cub Scouts Pack 103 held their annual Pinewood Derby March 12. Every Cub Scout cut, carved, sanded and painted a Pinewood Derby car out of a block of wood, added wheels, and were off to the races. First place winners were: Nicholas Henry, 1st place Webelos Den; Tyler Wil-1st place Bear Den; Jesse Prockish for Procldsh Products & Designs, 1st place Corporate Division; Tristan Williams, 1st place Tiger Den and Pack Champion; Braden Higdon, 1st place Wolf Den; and Wes Higdon, 1st place Youth Division.

Scott Novotny, pictured with Bob Berens and Rick Lowry, owner of The Office in Stockton, won the Texas Hold’em Tournament on March 6. He received a Henry .22 Rifle. Sixteen players were vying for the championship with Bob Berens placing second and Royce Muir taking third.

And So They Say — Irwin Iwanski (when asked how he’s feeling after being in the hospital): “I feel fine. It was just a patch job.”

Obituaries were published for James D. Norton (1931-2006), Thelma Grace Hocket (1917-2006), and Robert J. McClay (1923-2005).

Looking Back 14 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year...1992 — The area benefitted from a late winter snow totalling seven inches. Acting upon a recommendation by the KASB, co-superintendent Dennis Post announced that in the school calender the following year, Christmas Break will be called Winter Break.

56 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1950 — The Stockton Tiger basketball team made history when they were the first team to make it to the state playoffs after winning the Regional Class “B” Tour-nament held in Hays by defeating Bunker Hill. The Stockton Snafus were set to play the All American Redheads in a basketball matchup at Stockton High School on March 24. The ladies team featured Red Mason, the Female Red Skelton of the Courts, who was nicknamed “Miss Basketballf It was publicized that she could do anything with a basketball but eat it.

What Stocktonites Were Doing 98 Years Ago, Spotlighting the Year... 1908 — The last number of the Stockton Lecture Course was to occur on Thursday, March 26th. The famous family of musical prodigies, the Hurby Brothers, will present the splendid entertainment, the finest of the series, at the Opera House. Those who love to hear fine music, the real thing, should not fail to go to this.
