After spelling “embrace” correctly, fifth-grade student Golden Potter became the 2023 Stockton Grade School Spelling Bee Champion. Potter entered the competition as the fifth-grade alternate, making it an even bigger win. The top four who will represent Stockton at the Rooks County Spelling Bee on Wednesday, February 8th, at the Nova Theatre in Stockton are Golden Potter, Mia Odle, Damon Muir, and Lyric Snyder. Blayke Stithem is the alternate.

The students spelled a total of 134 words during the twelve rounds of the contest.

The girls and boys representing their class were in top form, with only a few going out each round. There was even a clean round during the competition when every student spelled their word correctly.

The announcer for the event was counselor Scott Bennett, with teachers Erica Dryden and Kari Kephart as the judges. During the competition, the students could ask to have the word repeated, ask for a definition, or have the term used in a sentence.

Competing in the school spelling bee after placing in the top four in their class were: (fourth-grade) Judsten Cockrell, Hannah Dunning, Maleigha Horn, Raicelynn Huenergarde; (fifth-grade) Chloe Kuhlmann, Harper Lowry, Hadlee Sterling, Golden Potter; (sixth-grade) Blayke Stithem, Raiden Huenergarde, Khloe Jones, Bentley Carpenter; (seventh-grade) Damon Muir, Joseph Cockrell, Lyric Snyder, Meredith Gasper; (eighth-grade) Skylar Amlong, Brenna Odle, Mia Odle, and Isaac Thayer.
