Hays police investigating death of five-month-old

ELLIS COUNTY—Just after noon on Tuesday, April 2nd, emergency personnel were dispatched to the Roadway Inn, Room #206, 3403 Vine Street in Hays, for a child not breathing, according to a media release. Hays police officers arrived after EMS and observed EMS staff performing CPR on a five-month-old infant. The child was transported to Hays Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. The death of the infant is under investigation by the Hays Police Department and the Ellis County Coroner’s Office. Police did not release the name of the child.

KBI makes two arrests after drug bust at Northwest Kansas home

RAWLINS COUNTY—Just after noon on Tuesday, April 2nd, KBI agents and the Rawlins County Sheriff’s Office officials executed a search warrant at 204 Decatur Avenue in McDonald.

Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were located during the search. Claudine Valles, 48, of McDonald, was arrested for unlawful distribution of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant, and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to online jail records, she is being held on a $50,000.00 bond. Allen Statley, 36, of McDonald, was arrested for possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant, possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple violations of the Kansas Offender Registration Act. He is being held on a $125,000.00 bond. The Atwood Police Department and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in this operation. (Hays Post)

Inmate serving time for murder dies in Kansas prison

RENO COUNTY—Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Watson Kevin Bradford, 51, died Wednesday, April 3rd, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Corrections. He was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday afternoon. Staff began lifesaving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. Mr. Bradford was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy. Bradford was serving a life sentence for convictions of first-degree murder, attempted robbery, and forgery committed in Leavenworth County, Kansas. Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing. Bitcoin scam at Kansas fast food restaurant

SALINE COUNTY—On Saturday, March 31st, just after 4:00 p.m., a Taco Bell employee, 1700 West Crawford Avenue in Salina, received a suspected scam call from someone who claimed they were a corporate staff member who requested more than $1,500.00 in Bitcoin from the franchise, according to Salina Police Department Captain James Feldman. The employee first attempted to verify the reliability of the corporate staff member. “The caller stated there was a financial discrepancy and the business needed to pay in Bitcoin to fix the issue,” Feldman said. “The employee asked multiple questions, which the caller was able to answer. The employee decided to purchase Bitcoin.” Feldman said the employee made three transactions for the local Taco Bell franchise for $1,618.00 in Bitcoin. Around 6:30 p.m., the employees realized the scam and contacted police. Police have not reported a suspect as they continue to investigate. (Hays Post)

No April Fool’s joke about speeding

HARVEY COUNTY—It was no April Fool’s joke in Harvey County on Monday, April 1st. According to a social media report from Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Chad Crittenden and Master Trooper Morris, he stopped a motorist on Highway 50 in Harvey County for driving 95 mph over the posted speed limit. In February, KHP Lieutenant Craig Davis had an encounter with a 2011 BMW on Interstate 70, checking its speed at 151 mph and 76 mphover the speed limit, according to a social media report from the KHP. During approximately the same week, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported two traffic stops for 100 plus miles per hour within six miles in the same afternoon, and both vehicles had children in the car, according to a social media report. The resulting fine for Lieutenant Davis’s efforts alone amounted to $993.00, not including the second ticket from police. Trooper Morris did not report the amount of the fine for the driver on Monday. (Hays Post)
