BACK TO BASICS. During the 1960 NFL Championship game, the Packers lost the lead with 5:21 left. They started the last drive at their own 35 yard line with only 1:05 left and needing a touchdown. As time ran out, they were just 9 yards from the win. On the first day of training camp the nextlively when John the Baptist said, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am NOT WORTHY to stoop down and loose” (Mark 1:7). The point is that we, as sinners, cannot make ourselves worthy of gaining God’s forgiveness. Picture it as God sitting on His Judgment Throne. He looks at a sinner on Judgment Day and is about to bang His gavel down to declare the person guilty and sentenced to hell. But at that moment, Jesus Christ stands to His feet. He holds out His hands and confesses, “I gave My life for this one and he as trusted Me.” In response, the Judge states, “Based on your faith in My Son, I declare you Not Guilty!” “Enter into the joy on your Lord” (Matt. 25:23). No, we cannot make ourselves worthy based upon our faithfulness or obedience or penance. Vince Lombardi said, “This is a football” but God says, “This is my Son.” Are you worthy of heaven? Nope. None of us are, for Jesus alone is “the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). summer, Vince Lombardi famously held up a pigskin and said, “Gentleman, this is a football.” The team spent the summer drilling the basics - how to block, how to tackle, how to run every play. Though favored by only 3 1/2 points, the Packers blew out the Giants in the 1961 NFL Championship game 37 to 0. The basics paid off big time! The Apostle Paul did the same thing by drilling basic truths about Jesus Christ and eternal life when writing to new Christians in Colosse. Paul told them it is “the Father who has qualified us” for heaven (Col. 1:12). The Greek word for “qualify” means “to make sufficient, to make worthy.” The word was used nega-

Stockton Fire Dept. answers several calls over the weekend

Body
Strong winds prompted fire calls to the Stockton Fire Department over the weekend beginning on Saturday morning, March 7th when the department received a call for mutual aid from Woodston to help with a fire at Keith Chesney’s property. Milo stalks had caught on fire, but thankfully by the time firemen arrived, the fire had been put out and contained with the use of a tractor plowing around the area. This was just the first of several calls received through- out the day as the volunteers were again called out for mutual aid at 12:16 p.m. to help with a grass fire located west of Glade. The next call came at 4:26 p.m. when the volunteers put out a dumpster fire at the Stockton Street Shop, but that was not the end of the calls for that day. Stockton received their last call Saturday for mutual aid near Plainville to help with a grass fire located at the Rooks County line near Natoma at 12:59 p.m.

REALITY CHECK. Where have we gone wrong? If we're going to be brutally honest, we have to look no further than the average home in America. It's no secret that many, many young people are growing up in less than ideal circumstances. And those circumstances point back to mom and dad. However, all is not lost...IF parents would only follow God's Word. In talking to Jewish parents roughly 3,500 years ago, God essentially told them, "The buck stops with you!" when He said, "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength" (Deut. 6:5). That's the answer to our question! Multitudes of parents no longer love God with all their hearts. In other words, they have no interest in God, Jesus Christ, the Bible, or living for things eternal. Am I "pointing fingers"? I don't mean do. It's just reality. My own parents were "arm's length" religious at best. They didn't understand their sinfulness nor that saving faith in Jesus Christ was necessary for God's forgiveness and eternal life. In short, they didn't love God with all their heart. And therefore, they also never taught me God's Word nor my need to trust Christ. God went on to tell those Jewish parents, "You shall teach them (God's commands) diligently to your children (Deut. 6:7). A godly, God-fearing, God-loving society starts with parents being rightly related to Jesus Christ and humbly walking in obedience to God's Word. When that's the case, they then pass that love of God and His Word on to their children. It seems clear that Joseph and Mary taught Jesus. When he was only 12, they found Jesus in the temple both listening to the rabbis and asking them questions, "And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers" (Luke 2:47). Jesus knew God's Word! So, there's still hope today, for if parents would trust Christ, they would be enabled to love God with all their heart...and to pass it on.
