* And So They Say: Pudy Larson: “Chuck Schruben really displayed unusual bravery the other day when he went out and played Bridge with the ‘Fearsome Foursome.’ He didn’t let the women get the best of him, though, as he played high score.” Howard Webster: “Everyone thinks the other guy’s job is the easiest.” Ivan Grimes: “I still have wheat and it is going to be all right—that is, if it rains.” Nora Marshall (Monday): “I wish we were supposed to be watching for thunder showers instead of tornadoes this afternoon.”

* The Stockton High School Commencement exercises were set for May 17th. The senior class was one of the smallest in years, with only thirty-seven students. But what it lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality, with an unusually large percentage of students earning scholastic achievements.

* Twelve Kansas beef producers from ten counties received Beef Production awards at the Cattlemen’s Day on the Kansas State University campus. One of the trophies for outstanding management in the commercial cowherd division by breed was awarded to Gus Overley of Phillipsburg. Marvin McReynolds, Woodston, received a certificate for cowherd management.

* The Tigers at the Mid-Continent League track meet broke four school records. The Tigers placed third as a team, with Butch Look placing first in the 100-yard dash and James Walker first in the pole vault. The school records were Nick Lowe, who broke the 880-yard run record with a time of 2.08; Dick Nyp, who broke his record in the 440 dash with a time of 54.1; Kenny Knight broke his record in the two-mile run with a time of ten minutes and 53 seconds, and the mile relay of Dick Nyp, Randy Towns, David Couch, and Craig Phelps setting the record with a time of 3:41.2.

* The High School golf team added another laurel to its crown by tying for first in the league competition. Golf had not been part of the local school’s athletic program for very long, and this fine showing was very gratifying for golf coach C. R. Scott.

* Stockton’s Explorer Scout Rifle team placed first in the Wheatland District meet at Cedar Bluff. Three of the boys on Stockton’s four-man team placed very high individually, with Quentin Van Eaton second high, Tommy Carmichael fourth high, and Butch Look fifth high.

* The Stockton Women’s and Men’s Bowling Association held a banquet at the Country Club and elected officers for the coming year. The women officers named were president Opal Bonneau, vice-president Margarete Lowe, secretary/treasurer Iva Lee McMillen, and Iletta Baxter as sergeant- at-arms. The men’s officers were president Rip Poore, vice president Doyal Hrabe, secretary/ treasurer Glen Arbogast with the Board of Directors comprising of Dr. William Votapka, Dode Morrissey, and Tom Baxter.

* From The Feminine Slant By The Office Cat: The most sincere get-well cards are usually received from your health and life insurance companies.

* Looking Backward Fourteen Years Ago: Dr. and Mrs. B. M. Korb were parents of a daughter born on May 7th. The Girl Scouts were badly in need of leaders as one of the leaders was moving out of town, and the other was having a baby.

* On sale at Glenn’s Mr. AG Store were four jars of Zestee grape jelly for $1.00, a five-pound bag of granulated pure beet sugar for 49¢ with a $5.00 purchase, two pounds of hamburger for $1.09, and a ten–pound bag of Colorado McClure potatoes for 69¢.

* Showing at the Park Drive-In were the movies “Fort Utah” starring John Ireland and Virginia Mayo and “Tarzan.”
