STOCKTON JUNIOR HIGH WRESTLER, HUNTER HOWELL, a 7th grader, brought home the Championship at the MCEL Wrestling Tournament held Thursday, February 20th, at Ellis. Howell not only won first place, but how he did it was even more impressive. Howell won all five of his matches with pins—the first four nearly 30 seconds into each match, and in the Championship match, pinning his opponent, Hunter Sisson of Phillipsburg in the second period. Justin Knoll and Rylan Basart are headed to the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, after finishing fourth at the regional tournament held last week in Norton.

With the regular season coming to an end last Friday for the Stockton Tigers, their sights are now set on Regionals which began this Tuesday and run through Saturday. Both Tiger basketball teams traveled to Downs-Lakeside this Tuesday to take on the Knights. The winners advance to the semifinals of the 1A Regional Basketball Tournament, hosted by Rock Hills High School in Mankato, Thursday through Saturday.

MONDAY NIGHT MIXED LEAGUE

Ten-year-old Ericka Johnston is very talented in her gymnastics and has the medals to show for it. On two separate weekend meets in Kansas City, Ericka achieved 3rd place from one and 1st and 2nd place medals at the second. Ericka, who lives in Clay Center, is the granddaughter of Marta Johnston and the great-granddaughter of Aloha Odle.

Five Rooks County students are among the 921 who completed associate, bachelor’s or graduate degrees at Fort Hays State University in the fall 2019 semester.

The Stockton Tigers jumped out to an early lead against the visiting Trego Eagles, but had to hold on down the stretch to pull out the 44-40 win in Mid-Continent League boys action last Tuesday at Tiger Gymnasium. On the girls side, it was the Trego Lady Eagles who dominated from the start and went on to win 71-28.

The Stockton Lady Tigers led for much of Friday night’s non-league contest against the Osborne Lady Bulldogs, but after falling behind early in the fourth quarter, it took a late comeback to lift the visiting Lady Tigers to a 55-51 victory. On the boys’ side, a barrage of treys from Osborne proved to be too much to overcome as the Tigers fell 81-69.

Jonathan Graham went 4-0 against opponents from Plainville, Russell, Hill City and Great Bend to win the Plainville Open Tournament at 10 & Under 79 pounds. Jonathan won by three falls and one decision to place first.
